PAHANG 1 COCONUT PLANTATION MALAYSIA

Biotech Plantation’s Pahang 1 Coconut Plantation is located in Rompin, a district in the Southeastern corner of Pahang, Malaysia.

The district covers an area of 5,296 km and located 130 kilometres from Kuantan, the capital city of Pahang. The main town is Kuala Rompin and another town located in the district is Bandar Muadzam Shah. The main tourist attraction in Rompin is the island resort of Tioman Island, and the area is well known for its agriculture and fishing.

The Pahang-1 Coconut Plantation has the Pandan, Matag and Malaysian Yellow Dwarf variety of coconut, and can produce up to 30,000 coconuts per hectare.

COCONUT

The coconut palm tree (Cocos Nucifera) is a member of the palm family (Arecaceae), and botanically the fruit is a drupe and not a nut. Coconut is one of the most versatile crops, often referred to as the “Tree of Life” for its many contributions. Every part of the palm can be utilised; from building materials to healthy foods and cosmetics. Coconut is tolerant of salinity and flourish the best close to the sea and is normally cultivated in the tropics as they like abundant sunshine and regular rainfall.

  • Varieties

    There are two main types of coconut palm, tall and dwarf. The as the name suggests, the tall grows up to 90 feet, whereas the dwarf can grow up to 60 feet and starts to bear fruit at early age of 3-5 years. In addition, there are hybrid varieties that combine the features of both and greatly increase coconut yields to up to 30,000 coconuts per hectare.

    Malaysia

    According to the Malaysia Department of Statistics, in 2019, coconut had the largest consumption per capita of any fruit at 22.7kg, however, the Self Sufficiency Ratio (SSR) is only 68.2% forcing Malaysia to import coconuts to meet the local demand.

    Market

    The global demand for coconuts is driven by its versatility, with coconut water, milk, cream, oil, flour and biomass fuel all demonstrating strong demand. As a coconut producer, Malaysia is ranked in the top 10 producing countries. This growing demand for coconut is leading to predictions that demand will outstrip supply as palms in mature growing countries of the Philippines and Indonesia become aged, and crop yields drop.
